BREAKING NEWS POLITICS

How/where are you celebrating your birthday and with whom? “My family and I are having dinner with my parents. They are snowbirds in Florida and just coming back for the spring.”

How did you get your start in politics? “My first real job in Washington was as a researcher for Ben Wattenberg at the American Enterprise Institute. I learned that ideas shape politics and policy. Despite turmoil in the system, substance matters to D.C. decision makers. They actually read books and articles to help inform decisions.”

What’s an interesting book/article you’re reading now or finished? And why? “I’m reading ‘President Carter: The White House Years,’ Stu Eizenstat’s memoir of the Carter administration. People talk about fighting and dysfunction in this administration, but Cy Vance and Zbig Brzezinski would’ve fit right in. Next up is Jonah Goldberg’s ‘Suicide of the West: How the Rebirth of Tribalism, Populism, Nationalism, and Identity Politics is Destroying American Democracy’ He’s a great writer, laugh out loud funny, and has important things to say.”

What is a trend going on in the U.S. or abroad that doesn’t get enough attention? “Harm reduction. Alternative nicotine delivery technologies may help current smokers transition away from tobacco. 40 million smokers in the U.S. — and one billion globally — need a true alternative to combustible cigarettes, something recently recognized by the FDA.”

How is the Trump presidency going? “I haven’t been bored a single minute.”

What’s a fun fact that people in Washington might not know about you? “I’ve played tennis on the White House court, the U.S. Senate court, and the Federal Reserve’s court — yes, they have one.”
